Anteriorly, the costal pleura turns sharply onto the mediastinum, and the underlying portion of the pleural cavity is called the costomediastinal recess. Inferiorly, the costal pleura is continuous with the diaphragmatic pleura, and the underlying space is termed the costodiaphragmatic recess.
