Italian term or phrase: scienze delle leggi/scienze dei processi
I'm translating a text on modern science and have encountered these terms. "Scienze delle leggi" seems to be what I'd call "empirical science," but I'm unaware of anything for "scienze dei processi" and hesitate to label it "procedural science" if there is already a term for this in English.

Here's something I found elsewhere on the Internet in Italian explaining the phrases:

Nell’ambito scientifico viene fatta attualmente una fondamentale distinzione fra “scienze delle leggi”, e “scienze dei processi” . Le prime, costruite prendendo a modello la fisica newtoniana, sono caratterizzate dalla ricerca e dall’enunciazione di leggi necessarie e universali della natura e perciò capaci di rigorose previsioni, in cui il

Asker: Wow, very fast answer and very good. The best I'd been able to come up with was the ungainly "law-based sciences" for "scienze delle leggi," because "empirical sciences" was conflicting with what followed in my text. The philosophical distinction is clearly between "nomothetic" and "idiographic" approaches, and while my text uses "nomotetico" once to parenthetically explain what it means by "scienze delle leggi," it does not use "idiografico" for "scienze dei processi" and I don't feel like just dumping such an obscure word as "idiographic" into the text. "Qualitative" is quite good for this purpose. Thanks again! Dan
