Perhaps it's just tiredness but I just can't get the meaning of 'stanno in piedi' here.

I posted the answer thinking about today's "Pagans" who in fact draw signs on the floor and stand on them, near them, etc.

Riguardo questo secondo tipo di divinazione proposto da Porfirio, Giamblico rettifica e preferisce parlare della divinazione per illuminazione del veicolo etereo e luminoso attaccato all’anima.

pag 82: Dopo aver diffusamente parlato della divinazione pubblica (sogni, entusiasmo, teoforia, oracoli) Giamblico esamina un’altra forma di divinazione, stavolta privata, chiamata in causa da Porfirio e relativa a coloro che stanno in piedi sui caratteri. Ebbene, di questa mantica dispongono rettamente i teurghi, ma anche coloro i quali operano in maniera analoga con la menzogna e l’inganno, ottenendo non già la presenza di un dio, benzì un’apparizione oscura e immaginaria. Nelle manifestazioni autentiche della divinità, la luce della stessa brilla incontrastata e caccia via il disordine degli spiriti malvagi. Non è tutto: coloro che si “accontentano” di stare in piedi sui caratteri, ignorano completamente l’arte ieratica e sono così privi d’esperienza che credono poter comandare l’ingresso di uno spirito dopo appena un’ora dall’inizio del rituale.
