Arrivano prima, le fotografie di XXXX, e vanno oltre il “bel dire”, indagando su una risposta al loro essere autentiche, come criterio di valore, cercando segni particolari, egli stesso viandante con scarpe fatte di luci e ombre.

I am actually proofreading this text carried out by another colleague who translated the requested phrase quite literally as "shoes made of lights and shadows" ; I was looking for more of a play on words with something like "chiaroscuro" - but nothing springs to mind - would this work somehow? Thanks in advance.

shoes of light and shade
Explanation:
I think on balance you can skip "made" or you could put it in "shoes made of light and shade": old-fashioned chiaroscuro.
