Italian term or phrase: VR
Dear folks,

I'm struggling my way through a document about linear dynamic analysis - the calculation of seismic effects on two distillation towers.

Would anyone have any idea what VR stands for in the context of this sentence?
The construction has "...una vita nominale di VN= 50 anni e un periodo di riferimento per l'azione sismica pari a VR=100 anni"

I figure "vita nominale" is "rated life", so VN = LR. Could the next part be "seismic timeline of reference" and VR = TR?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions... (Oh, and Merrry Christmas!)

English translation:reference period (vita/valore di riferimento)
Explanation:
The reference period Vr = the Vn (nominal life) * the use class Cu.

The reference I have given is to a translation from Italian since Google gives no original English lang documents. Italy has much more on this stuff, because the huge number of earthquakes. For similar stuff you would have to look in Japan of perhaps California.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Jim and Phil, I think I'll go for reference period then. Have a good holiday!

agree  philgoddard: I think that even if this is not the most commonly used phrase among seismologists, a literal translation would be perfectly understandable.

Note to reference poster
Asker: Yes, VR is "vita di riferimento", but what I meant was, what should I put in English... Should it be "timeline of reference"... "TR"?

Asker: Thank you guys, much appreciated
