Italian to English translations [PRO]
Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Italian term or phrase: armatore
The term is translated as "owner" or "shipowner" everywhere. I am translating a document where "armatore" stands for the person/company operating the ship while "proprietario" is the owner.
Can anybody suggest any term specific to the shipping industry?

owner

Explanation:
I would distinguish proprietario by using the term "title holder", as it may be a leasing company, a bank or another individual or company, especially in Italy where the law is very vague and therefore is used to get around taxation and fees. In most countries these are one and the same. I would hesitate to call the captain of a large yacht the "armatore" as s/he is merely the operator and in charge of its navigation and maintenance, etc. While the "armatore" is the entity or person that is responsible for the vessel, while the "Proprietario" or "title holder" may be a completely uninvolved third party, as above.

Ship-owner
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A shipowner is the owner of a merchant vessel (commercial ship). In the commercial sense of the term, a shipowner is someone who equips and exploits a ship, usually for delivering cargo at a certain freight rate, either as a per freight rate (given price for the transport of a certain cargo between two given ports) or based on hire (a rate per day). Shipowners typically hire a licensed crew and captain rather than take charge of the vessel in person. Usually the shipowner is organized through a company, but also people and investment funds can be ship owners. If owned by a ship company, the shipowner usually performs technical management of the vessel through the company, though this can also be outsourced or relayed onto the shipper through bareboat charter.

Notes to answerer

operator

Explanation:
I recently proofed a translation where the owner of the yacht was a bank which leased it to the "armatore" which we translated as the "ship operator", since most of the dictionaries tend to give ship owner, which just was not the case.

agree  Paul O'Brien: Yes, in shipping of an industrial nature Operator (and they like their capital O, and if you don't believe me ask the Master - NOT the Captain) is correct. I'd leave out the type of vessel in the term. Just "Operator".
