Italian term or phrase: Secondo Ufficiale di Coperta
This is the job title that comes up during a police interview regarding a case in the area of shipping/boats. The respondent explains that within the merchant ferry/shipping line that employs him, he works as a:

"Secondo Ufficiale di Coperta"

I have found this to be something on the lines of "Second Officer" with the duties of a "Deckhand".

Can we say:

"Second Officer on deck" or "Second Deck Cadet" or is "cadet" only limited to military roles?

deck officer does not exist. See my link. The difference between deck officer and engineer is that Chief Engineer could be called Chief Engineer Officer. See your previous quesiton re direttore di macchina

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, but I thought the "deck" aspect of the role should not be covered in this? i.e. if "di coperta" describes the deckhands, is this naturally understood in the English?
