Science - Ships, Sailing, Maritime / Merchant shipping/ferry court case
Italian term or phrase: cinematica
In this verbale the defendant, who was working on a ferry as Officer of the Watch at the time, is being asked questions about the events leading up to an accident. Context:

I have attempted:

Q: ...
A: "When the sailor informs me of an obstruction, I assess the KINEMATICS and any necessary alteration to the course in accordance with the rules for preventing collisions at sea."

I am aware that the generic translation for this is "kinematics" and in the meantime I have used this. But I have been told that this is not a maritime/nautical term and I would like to know if there is a better and more appropriate term I could use in place of this.

course and speed
Explanation:
Try this
When the lookout warns me of a contact, I assess our course and speed in relation to the same, then manoeuvre the vessel in observance of the rules for preventing collisions at sea.

N.B.: in Italian he doesn't say he assesses the manoeuvre. He assesses the situation, then changes course and perhaps speed to avoid a possible collision

kinematics

Explanation:
Kinematics is the branch of classical mechanics that describes the motion of points, bodies (objects) and systems of bodies without consideration of the forces that cause it.
Kinematics is often referred to as the geometry of motion.
Kinematics studies the trajectories of points, lines and other geometric objects and their differential properties such as velocity and acceleration.

cinematica significa, rotta, velocità, punto di eventuale incontro, ecc.e la "naval kinematics" è oggi elaborata da computers.

Asker: Thank you for your help. The problem was that "kinematics" is the scientific/academic term for this and is not used within the shipping industry in UK.

Asker: Exactly my point, kinematics is a subject taught on scientific degrees and during technical training for maritime skills. It is not however I term used between sailor to sailor on the job itself. If it was I would have used it myself - as stated in my original question.
