Ma la grande vela dell'albero maestro poteva essere ampliata in caso di vento debole con l'aggiunta di una vela di gabbia, cosi detta perché posta al di sopra della gabbia (o coffa), quella specie di balconcino rotondo dove si saliva in vedetta.

that cage-shaped structure near the top of the mast into which lookouts would climb

I've changed it around a bit by mentioning the person who does the looking-out-it sounds better to me that way

naturally you could translate it literally as

round balcony where one would climb up to look-out/to keep watch
