The context is a multimedia project by peace campaigners against the use of weapons and barricades to achieve one's aims. "Meeting place among men" doesn't seem to work at all...

a meeting place for different ideas

Explanation:
Am I getting the wrong end of the stick here, or is this a Michael Moore-style feeling that the fear culture is even being helped sub-consciously by us, as we accept and even promote the 'barricades'? If the barricades are literal as your note suggests,..'a meeting place/open forum for different ideas' or Jules' suggestion might do it. But if they are metaphorical, representing a mind-set, then you might translate it 'the generally held opinion', Just a couple of thoughts.

Explanation:
To paraphrase was it George Washington and definitely Cicero, I'm sorry I didn't have time to write a shorter translation, but I'm afraid I might have needed months. "luogo d'intesa" makes me think of churches.
