I'm not sure of the meaning of the second half of this sentence.

I am considering 'Without realising it, or perhaps, to be more accurate, before they had realised it', but I am not sure this is accurate.

I don't feel that "rather" or "I mean" does justice to "meglio" here, mind you I'm not sure that "probably" is a perfect answer.

If it is "meglio" then how do you explain the "forse" ?
