Italian to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. / bilancio sociale
Italian term or phrase:presuppone
The context: "Promuovere il progresso e creare valore per tutti i portatori di interesse presuppone la condivisione e l’interiorizzazione di comportamenti comuni, improntati ad un costante senso di eticità negli affari, di trasparenza e correttezza nel perseguimento di quel rapporto di fiducia che ha consentito alle diverse realtà che compongono il Gruppo il conseguimento della nostra dimensione e rispettabilità nel tempo." Hi Jim, I only just saw you chose my answer. Finally, I managed to answer one of yours after you've helped me so much with a thousand of mine! I'm honoured! Sarah ;)
Thank you Sarah. This is how I finally did it.
To promote progress and to create value for all stakeholders means sharing and internalising common conduct. It is conduct based on a constant sense of ethics in business and of transparency and integrity in the pursuit of that relationship of trust which has allowed the different realities which make up the Group to achieve our new size and maintain our reputation 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
As the asker, by definition the most ignorant party on this page can I ask the askers, the most knowledgeable, to each vote for what they consider to be the next best answer, and I will select that. Once that has been selected, I will post my final translation. Cheers in advance everybody.

This has been reported in the web page of the "accademia della crusca", that I have indicated above. One day, maybe, it will become acceptable due to a bad habit (which I find really sad), but today it is considered still poor italian.

"famigliare" are typical examples. My teacher would have kicked me out of the classroom, while nowadays they are considered acceptable. In this specific case, there are many italians who (obviously not speaking italian by the rules) use the singular verb

Giles, hi. I am sorry if I am not a "new" italian speaker in the forum but I would like to explain a couple of things. The text is written in bad italian. Sometimes bad italian, if spread enough in spoken AND written language is accepted. "A me mi",
Hi manumanu and Trish: the singular verb is obviously "correct" insofar as it is the production of a native speaker. I'd like to hear more explanations from native Italian speakers of why it is acceptable, if anyone has any.
Although my native language is English, I grew up hearing Italian from birth. So, while I am unable to explain the grammatical rules behind my opinion, I too believe that the phrase is correct because to me it "sounds" correct.
No irony intended Olga. "bread and butter is good for children" is correct in English if they are intended as a singular entity (sandwich, "calcio e lo sport" attività fisica) and it is wrong if they are intended as separate things "Bread and butter are different types of...". The rule is usage with the grammar following the semantics, but I think on a vote among Italian teachers you would lose the day for Italians.

Thanks again, Olga. At the end of the day, it's the writer's language and it's up to him/her how s/he treats it. You must be a great teacher, by the way. When I was at school, "exceptions" like that were called "mistakes" ;-)

Jim you are right. There are two subjects so the verb should be "presuppongono". "Long sentences entail big mistakes" as my teacher used to tell me.

Olga please could you explain why this is an exception? It does not sound like an exception to me at all. The only exception I can think of is what Giles is talking about and that is not the case.
Thanks, Olga. I know that a "concordanza a senso" is possible with a collective subject but the notions here are distinct and logically plural. Italian is generally stricter than English on number agreement, which is why the usage caught my attention.
Hi Giles. The phrase i correct in Ialian. It would be too long to explain you the Italian grammar rules in this contest but "presuppone", the third singular person of the verb "presupporre", is right in this translation. Have a nice day!
For Olga: is the singular verb (presuppone) acceptable with two subjects (promuovere-creare)? You see this construction sometimes in English but not very often in Italian.
The sentence is too long to me too. It's a problem of punctuation. If you need it I can rewrite , in Italian, the entire sentence making shorter phrases. Let me know.
I feel that the sentence is far too long and wordy and that most readers will just skip it and go on to the next part, but I'm not a native Italian speaker and may be I'm just angry at it because it is difficult to translate into something eloquent and readable. What do you think of the source sentence?
Oh this group of companies has merged recently, hence the refence to "dimensione", they are much bigger now.

presupposes
Explanation: This is a direct translation of the word. You could also use 'requires'
-------------------------------------------------- Note added at 21 mins (2008-05-29 05:41:34 GMT) --------------------------------------------------
So your target sentence would say "The creation of ... presupposes/requires the sharing and internalization (that's my U.S. spelling, of course) of ...." That is I'm suggesting "The promotion and creation..." as translations of the beginning of this sentence instead of 'TO promote and create..." and I'm suggesting the more active words 'presupposes' or 'requires' in place of the concept of 'assuming' that we share/internalize. Spero che sia chiaro! Ciao Jim.

leggendo la frase che hai fornito, il termine in questione mi dà più l'idea di poter essere tradotto con "implicazione". In questo senso puoi utilizzare qualunque dei termini che ti ho fornito.
