Italian term or phrase: motivare (in this context)
E nel richiamarmi a questa figura non propongo affatto di considerare la tabula come una metafora empiristica, in quanto tale difficile da MOTIVARE, come la tesi per cui non c’è nulla di innato nell’uomo.

In recalling this figure I am not proposing we should consider the tabula as an empiristic metaphor, as such difficult to PROVE,

do you think my use of TO PROVE is appropriate here?Or whatever do they mean by MOTIVARE?

make a case for (in this context)
Explanation:
"as an empiricist metaphor, difficult to make a case for as such,...". Highest because I feel this is precisely the meaning of "motivare" in this context. Note: "empiricist"

"make a case for" would leave you with a dangling preposition, requiring total reconstruction of the sentence....

agree  Marie-Hélène Hayles: definitely // I wouldn't be bothered by the dangling preposition, but the sentence is already too long and unwieldy - better a short and snappy "justify" than a long-winded "make a case for", even if the latter is a little closer to the mark.

Explanation:
I would leave it " to prove" as Lietta originally suggested. Seems fine to me...
