Just because ' famiglia prolungata' is used in Italian doesn't automatically mean that this literal rendition is the one used most. I searched the concept (in English with both prolonged and extended) and found fewer instances with prolonged .

Dear Verona, use anything you want but not "estended family". Other answers may be more or less good or bad translations, but the EF would be a WRONG translation. Guarrantee! I taught and published in Social and Cultural anthropology for almost 30 years, so you must trust me. By the way, "Prolonged" seems to be ringt but I don't like the way it sounds both anthropologically and linguistically. And yet can't come up with anything better. Sorry

Sorry Oliver, sorry Sher Lyn for my earlier insertions of disagreement!! I was so sure about the extended family (wrong!) that I didn't even bother too look at the context (shame on me!). I provide a suggestion. I guess one would either use the arcane "diachronically extended" or somehow gloss it as Shera Lyn did. Sorry again!

According to Answers.com, extended family is
1 A family group that consists of parents, children, and other close relatives, often living in close proximity.
2 A group of relatives, such as those of three generations, who live in close geographic proximity rather than under the same roof.

I doubt that we have a term in English for the concept expressed in your text, as in the UK at least young adults tend to leave home as soon as possible.
