Italian term or phrase: materiale dell\'identità
La memoria, come depositato del tempo, si fa immaginazione attraverso un processo di rielaborazione, contestualizzazione e interpretazione ogni volta nuova del materiale mnestico: ricordando modifichiamo i nostri ricordi, sovrapponendovi nuovi dati e nuovi significati, che diventano così materiale dell’identità come continuo progetto, mai concluso, di sé.

I'm not sure about that "materiale"...

Thanks!

Asker: Thanks Maria. Basically the meaning is that, but I'm trying to translate that "materiale" using a more refined word, without being too reductive :-)

the raw material of our identity

Explanation:
I think they mean it quite literally: our memories are the raw material out of which our identity is constructed.

The substance of our identity

Explanation:
An idea.

Or even,

"The substance that makes up our identity."

"This is a combination of emotions, attitudes, memories, predilections, dislikes, thoughts - all the stuff that MAKES UP OUR IDENTITY - who 'I' am"

Personally, I think "makes up our identity" sounds better.

Example sentence(s):
  • "Our memory is the SUBSTANCE OF OUR IDENTITY. When we forget, we are diminished. "
  • "We are not so concerned with the SUBSTANCE OF OUR IDENTITY as we are with whether or not, in this momentary loss of consciousness, we are living the same life that we were previously."
