If you look carefully at Tony's reference, it supports my assertion. In Italy, attività tecnica is what in english we call coaching, (see the translation of the Wiki article) and responsabile tecnico is the head coach, as there are several supporting roles in the major clubs, such as manager, assistant coach, etc.

BTW, Jim, I found the term Manager used for the head coach of the IT national soccer club - so, yes, it is acceptable in this context even though... usually "managers" of these teams only take care of administrative duties and rarely work with the players.

I'd say that in team sports like rugby, the Technical Advisor reports to the Head Coach / Team Trainer, bringing his personal expertise. (see above, Wiki on David Nucifora)

agree  philgoddard: It gets lots of hits in a rugby context.

-> The context is rugby. Thanks Phil.

disagree  Cedric Randolph: Resposabile = manager or head Tecnico = is the Coach in today's Italian. Otherwise this would be an assistant coach's position, but it's not.

-> you could possibly be right, is 'Allenatore' used within the rugby context? Could he have a 'responsabile tecnico' ?

agree  James (Jim) Davis: Or just "the coach" depending on context. Also manager. Sir Alex is the manager of Man United, "il tecnico" in Italian. Bill Nicholson was my favourite manager. But of course that is all with a round not an oval ball.

-> Thanks, Jim, maybe in the UK a coach can be called a manager, but here in Italy, the manager is a completely different role

neutral  philgoddard: You haven't given any references. And isn't coach allenatore?//Sorry, but that sounds arrogant. I didn't know what the answer was, but I find Tony's answer more convincing, mainly because he has given a reference.
2 hrs
-> I have lived here long enough to discern what is what without needing references for certain things. This is one of them. Responsabile tecnico of the nazionale is the head coach.

agree  Katia DG: Your answer is right, Cedric, but philgoddard is right, too: we are not obliged to know your biography, nor does the fact that you live in Italy prove that you can provide the correct translation.// I see, but still I do not agree with your answer to phil

-> Thank you, Katia - Often an appropriate translation may be a matter of usage rather than of reference. It's not important for me to be right, but to offer my knowledge in assistance to others to find an appropriate translation of many possible ones.
