Italian term or phrase: dipartimento sportivo
Dear all,
the company I work for manufactures fashion fabrics and it's planning to introduce a collection of seamless underwear and fabrics for sports activities. Now I have to translate "dipartimento sportivo" into English: is it "sport department" or "sports department"? Surfing the net I've found out that the second option is the most used, but which is the difference between the two?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!

English translation:sports department
Explanation:
Sorry, but sport in the singular is simply wrong for a shop. The department makes articles for all kinds of sports, not just for tennis, for example.
I had a quick look at some results for "sport department" and the first sites that came up were Juventus (Italian-written), the Armenian National Agrarian University and other foreign websites.
Ministries and government departments are different, though: there you may find a Sports Minister or a Minister for Sport; difficult to explain but basically it is a ministry for sport in general, whereas your company has a department serving all (different) sports..... hope this helps

Thank you very much Lorraine! We have to write it on the front page of catalogues, brochures and packaging to differenciate it from the "fashion department". I found as you said both "sport dep." and "sports dep." and I was not aware of the difference between the two. Thank you very much again!

sportswear department

Explanation:
Were not talking about doing sports, but about the clothes. So I'd go for sportswear.
