defence (US defense)
Explanation:
I think tackle is more suited to contact sports (football, rugby), while basketball is classified as non-contact. It has a lot of very specialised vocab, but in general all 'attacking' modes are called offense (US) and all 'defending' ones defense (surprise, surprise)
I think you will find this website very useful for basketball vocab -
So in your case, "get through" or even "outsmart" the opponents' defense(s) (I hate to see a plural on words like defenses, but if the Yanks who invented the game use it...)

Sì, ma in effetti come dice LorraineB nel basket non si usa molto "contrasto" (neanche in italiano).

Forse potrebbe andare bene "to win one-on-one situations".

disagree  Rosanna Palermo: no tackles are allowed in basketball, only football (not soccer). In soccer you can "check" a player but not tackle him. "American soccer" in in fact "football" see www.NFL.com

-> I'm not a native, but afaik in the US soccer (see MLS) and football (see NFL) are different sports, respectively known in the rest of the world as football and American football. Both sports allow something called tackles. But I know this is not the point :)
