Italian term or phrase: staffa
La divisa ufficiale, totalmente nera, ad eccezione dei pantaloni da gara a staffa degli uomini in grigio, è stata realizzata utilizzando un materiale tecnico di altissima qualità - can't understand from the context if it refers to the pants or the gara (doh!) any help would be more than welcome, we're talking artistic gymnastics Olympic level here. Thanks SUE

stirrup pants
Explanation:
Hi Sue. On first impact I'd say it's the men's competition trousers - which are grey (in grigio) as opposed to the official kit, which is all black.
I think the sport would be "staffetta"... but I won't object to anyone proving me wrong!

I get no hits for \"gara a staffa\" but plenty for \"gara a/di staffetta\"

stirrup

Explanation:
I'd guess it refers to stirrup pants (see attached link) very common in gymnastics (a band or strap of fabric sown to the bottom of the legs in order to keep them straight).
