Explanation:
Un cinquantennio dopo, contestualmente alle esperienze dello stesso genere condotte dai pittori fiamminghi, nasce il termine “stilleven” che conoscerà una contigua traduzione con il tedesco “Stilleben” e l’inglese “still life” per indicare il carattere fermo dei soggetto rappresentato, in opposizione all’immagine della figura umana che doveva essere colta nella mutevolezza dell’espressione.
La libera traduzione in francese (nature inanimée) e italiana (natura morta) conseguono ad un accademico giudizio negativo circa la perifericità del tema rispetto alla pittura religiosa e storica e alla minore abilità richiesta nel riprodurre soggetti che non esprimono carattere.
