Journal Explanation: Im Journal (übersetzt: Tagebuch) werden alle Geschäftsvorfälle chronologisch (zeitlich) mit laufender Nummer, Datum, Betrag, Verweis auf den Beleg, Erläuterung und Kontierung (Sollkonto, Habenkonto) erfasst. Die Funktion des Journals geht von folgendem Prinzip aus: Alle Geschäftsfälle müssen sich sowohl chronologisch verfolgen lassen als auch den einzelnen Bilanzpositionen zugeordnet werden können. Die chronologische Ordnung wird dadurch gewährleistet, dass alle Buchungssätze dem Datum nach im Journal aufgezeichnet werden. Es ist das Grundbuch der Buchführung.
