Explanation:
Posizione se refiere a la posición, es decir al lugar que ocupa el expediente en el archivo. Los expedientes tienen una numeración. El número que se asigna al expediente es la posizione.
En la embajada le decían "número de posición", pero creo que "numero de expediente" es también correcto e incluso más claro
