Example:

backward search for the number 6 in the string 123456 would return a match in the first searched position, while a forward search for the number 6 in the string 123456 would only return a match in the last position.

Notes regarding other answers:
前方一致検索 is not the same as "truncation" - truncation would involve a search and replace where extra characters would be dropped. Truncating the field "123456" to three characters would result in "123" or "456" depending if it was a left or right truncation.
consistency check - this is a more advanced function in which database headers, checksums or other structural components of the database are checked to ensure they are correctly formed, or consistent.

'begin word search' - this is a little vague, especially when "word" in computing terminology usually refers to different length numerical values. human language fields are usually referred to as "text" "strings" or "text strings".
analogue search - I think the answerer means to search for analogous terms, which I believe is not the intended meaning here.

disagree  Katalin Horváth McClure: Kurt, I think you got it backwards. This search tries to find mathes where the beginning of the string matches the search string. If the search string is "apple", then "apples" will be a match, but "application" will not be a match.
