Land reclaimed from Ainus Explanation: For background explanation of Hokkaido (known as Ezo), please see my answer to your other question. Although I believe you already know about it by now. In this case, the new immigrants of Japanese population (mostly former Samurai class that high ranking officials of newly established Meiji Government deemed politically dangerous) were allotted certain portion of lands to cultivate. Indeed they were Pioneers Japanese version. These lands were 旧土人開墾地, as all lands in Hokkaido belonged to the Ainus. |

former reclaimed land by aboriginals Explanation: I am not sure which word is used most commonly and correctly to refer to the Ainu people - aboriginal, native, indigenous - but I guess you don't need to be politically correct as 土人 is already a pretty bad word. By the way, did you know the Canadian government still uses the word "Indian" for our native peoples? http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/index-eng.asp -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 hrs (2009-02-20 12:54:03 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Oh, you may be right - maybe it should be "from." But if the text is referring to the land cultivated by Ainu, then it is "by." Linguistically, your phrase means "by." Maybe your text is saying the government redistributed the land formerly reclaimed BY Ainu to Wajin (Japanese). Is this the case? |
