arterial road windbreak Explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arterial_(highway) http://www.hfri.pref.hokkaido.jp/03kikaku/bofurin/01.pdf If 防風林is a windbreak, then 幹線 must be arterial road. In the second link, there is a definition in Japanese about what it's for. |

arterial windbreak forest Explanation: I know a little about these. They are called windbreak forests (belts of woodland) that are commonly used to protect against desertification (see link, reference is near the bottom). The above referenced document refers to 支線風防林 as well which although not 100 confident on i would recommend translating as "branch windbreak forest" Example sentence(s):
