Japanese term or phrase: 自己認証による
Could someone helps me understand what this means.

It is related to the expiration date that is displayed on each box, but I can't understand what it means.

使用期限: 個箱に表示(自己認証データによる)

Here is a link to an example of the product in question:

Explanation:
As this expiry date is for an adhesive first-aid plaster, I believe that the phrase (自己認証による) is a kind of disclaimer in case the box was already opened and contains older plasters or the adhesive went bad early due to issues such as storage temperature.

Notes to answerer
Asker: That would make sense. But what doesn't make sense is the use of the word データ. Perhaps it would be best to leave that out of the translation.

agree  Honyakusha Zeno: Ah, there you have it. Thank you for the follow up link. So I guess "data" is the information collected while performing the self certification procedure which is presumably contained within the box.

-> Yes. That use of data makes sense. The point is that the product is tested/checked "in house" and certified "in house" to meet specific standards, rather than being verified by a third party.
