Japanese term or phrase: 敬遠の材料になる
I am currently translating a sentence in the IT field, but this is not specifically IT terminology.

名称から連想できない機能は敬遠の材料になるかなと思う。

I have translated this as "I wonder if the features that cannot be associated with the name become ... "

Has anyone come across this before? I am thinking along the lines of "irrelevant", "unnecessary" or "unrelated".

may be put off by users/may put users off
Explanation:
In this situation, ”put off” means ”make somebody lose interest in”, as you know it well.
I hope this will be of some help to you.

make someone (users, customers, etc.) shy way from

Explanation:
This is just one way of possible translations for the context.

In other words, it will mean that people will avoid the features if they cannot tell what they are/do from their name. To put it in your context, “I wonder if the features that cannot be associated with the name make someone shy away from them.”

Explanation:
To me all other answers seem to be too "chokuyaku". Original sentencte is typical Japanese mode that does not necessary convey the idea that English reader expect to be there. I would forget about 敬遠の材料になる.
