現時点で、不正アクセスの犯人を突き止めるのは難しそうだ。

illegitimate? unathorised? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

English translation:unauthorized access
Explanation:
I would translate the phrase "不正アクセス" here as unauthorized access, but you may wish to add the concept of "hacking" - perhaps you could translate 犯人 as "hackers"?

The above phrasing may not be the best, but unless your client is Sony or its PR firm (or a similar victim and its PR firm), I would choose objective phrasing and avoid phrasing spun by a company as damage control for its public image. Lulzsec's 不正アクセス to the playstation network was illegal and people are being arrested for it (another was just arrested yesterday). If you do choose "unauthorized access," I highly recommend adding scare quotes around it to draw attention to its understated nature, as CNN does in its coverage.

agree  Vladyslav Golovaty: unathorised access sounds better, non?

-> Agreed it sounds better, but the person is described as 犯人, so "illegal" seems better than "unauthorized" (which doesn't necessarily entail illegality).

disagree  ronsmith: It is illegal because there is something called "不正アクセス禁止法", but the expression "不正アクセス" itself doesn't mean that it is "illegal". It means that it's "not correct" (不正) for some reason, which may or may not include the fact of its being illegal (違法).
