私法判例リマークス、判例時報 Affirmative Both Explanation: If you ask me which method I apply, I would say "Affirmative Both". I would translate into English immediately followed by Romanized form in ( ), for example "The Remarks on Civil Statute (or Private Law or Private Statute) Precidents (The Shihou Hanrei Remarks)". How does that sound to you? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs 7 mins (2005-01-09 15:10:29 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Unless English audience of your translated material is extremely familiar with Japanese legal terminologies (or else), Katakana alone would create a problem. I believe bridging that gap is part of our responsibility. Citing both might be one way to do it. |

私法判例リマークス、判例 Hanrei Jihou Remarks, Hanrei Jihou Explanation: Law experts seem to use the romanized form for 判例時報. Now, 私法判例リマークス is a special issue of Hanrei Jihou and there is no indication of that having been translated into English yet, so I would use the romanized form first, followed by an English translation in parenthesis to avoid legal problems such as copyright. ex. Shihou Hanrei Remarks (roughly translated as "Private Law Precedents") -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs 0 min (2005-01-09 22:03:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I would also ask the agency/client if such translations are needed for publications that have never been translated into English before.
