reducing ability decrease Explanation: First of all, if the text is related to coenzyme, it refers to antioxidation ability. Antioxidation is same as reduction in its final effect. Second, the reducing(or antioxidation) ability of our body decrease as we grow older. Coenzymes may be of benefit in this situation. Third, the term 'deteriorate' generally used in medical text to indicate disease state. the reduction ability is (could be) deteriorated Explanation: Coenzymes help the catalysis of enzymes for their reduction-oxidization reactions and they provide no action by themselves. It could be considered that the reduction ability with a certain coenzyme is deteriorated in a eldery's body because of the metabolic functions are deteriorated due to senile. Reference Reference information: (hopefully the links work) This one really is confusing... I'm browsing patent directories now (usually the last resort in my terminology searches) and the patent referenced below (same patent, two language versions) doesn't help much - 還元能力を有する試薬 is translated as "a coenzyme having reducing ability or an agent having oxidizing ability". Still, even though the oxidization/deoxidation is as confusing as it was before, it seems you can use "reducing" and "coenzymes" in the same sentence ;) Another confirmation though - are you sure that the body reduces the coenzymes, or is it possible that the ability of the coenzymes to reduce [some other stuff] is affected by age - can't say without more context, but my limited knowledge of biology and medicine tells me it might be the latter... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-10-03 05:51:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Well, that shows how limited my knowledge really is, doesn't it?
