Japanese term or phrase: 投影面積
context:

低重心化を図ったシャローフェース設計により、高弾道がよりやさしく得られます。また、投影面積が従来モデルよりも約18%向上し、構えたときの安心感を高めてくれます。

literal translation would be "projection area"
but this phrase is normally used to refer to video projection...
I don't see it being used to describe a feature of a golf club...

any suggestions?

Explanation:
Don't know much about golf, but came across sites such as these which explain the word in the context of gofing (in JAPANESE)! http://www.mizuno.co.jp/catalog/golf/func/club/club.html
Also this site says ヘッドの投影面積 is(真上から見たヘッドの大きさ)

projection (or projected) surface

Explanation:
From: http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5366223.html

Again for purposes of this specification, the surface representing the driver face is defined as the projection of the actual curved driver face (which has bulge and roll) onto the plane surface which is tangent to the driver face at its center. This is much the same as the outline of the face as seen in the flat (plane) surface of a photo of the driver face. FIGS. 1-6 are representative of such projections.

投影面積
Projected area

Explanation:
QUOTE The invention further provides an increased and more uniform "sight picture" due to an incremental increase in the hitting area of each iron face in a set of the present clubs, the hitting area increasing incrementally as the loft of each iron decreases. The unique visual performance characteristics of the present club heads essentially provides a consistent face projected area so that a user looking down at the club head sees a relatively large, confidence inspiring head size.UNQUOTE
