Grade One Race Explanation: (I entirely agree with Mikiko-san. This is just to add some illustration to help the asker understand the term more easily.) Horse races of importance are classified as “Graded Races.” And the Grades are further broken down to G1, G2 and G3 races in the order of importance, with the winner of a G1 race getting the highest award. According to JRA (Japan Racing Association), the system was first introduced in Japan in 1984. 戦 therefore stands for Race/races.
