Hemp Explanation: According to this fashion website, "紗繊糸" means "麻" ("hemp"). A lot of clothes are made out of hemp these days, and it does look like hemp to me. Reference: http://theredroof.jp/?pid=13299639 |

peper-ply thread Explanation: As Cinefil's reference, 「抄」seems to be the correct letter, which means "making paper". If that's the case "paper-ply thread" would be closer in meaning. |

hempen thread - the same that's used to make Japanese paper Explanation: As cinefil and Ms. Regan note, the original term is likely the result of a mis-type. 抄織糸 is a sturdy fiber, often constructed from hemp, used both in modern knitting/crochet work and Japanese paper construction. It can also be woven into a fabric. Using this special term as opposed to referring to the fiber directly highlights both the durability and distinct "Japanese" feel of the material. Below is a simple Google images search, used to reference some of the products made from this material. As far as I know, however, there is no particular English gloss for 抄織糸. |
