Japanese term or phrase: 紗繊糸
古くから「紗繊糸」と呼ばれ日本文化に存在してきた「紙の糸」。

The first kanji 紗 seems to mean gauze, but I'm wondering if there's any special name for 紗繊糸...

English translation:peper-ply thread
Explanation:
As Cinefil's reference, 「抄」seems to be the correct letter, which means "making paper".
If that's the case "paper-ply thread" would be closer in meaning.

Belated thanks to Mika and everyone else. I ended up going with "paper-ply thread" as the rest of the article revolved a lot around the use of washi.

Hemp

Explanation:
According to this fashion website, "紗繊糸" means "麻" ("hemp"). A lot of clothes are made out of hemp these days, and it does look like hemp to me.

hempen thread - the same that's used to make Japanese paper

Explanation:
As cinefil and Ms. Regan note, the original term is likely the result of a mis-type. 抄織糸 is a sturdy fiber, often constructed from hemp, used both in modern knitting/crochet work and Japanese paper construction. It can also be woven into a fabric. Using this special term as opposed to referring to the fiber directly highlights both the durability and distinct "Japanese" feel of the material.

Below is a simple Google images search, used to reference some of the products made from this material. As far as I know, however, there is no particular English gloss for 抄織糸.
