peace. well-being and luck Explanation: Though the Malays have been Islamized for over 5 centuries, animistic superstitions still run strong in them. Such 'tahyul' make them favour odd numbers but one is out, whilst three means the middle piece or rung would be haunted, so five is the safest whilst seven is too much. Five are the main apostles: Ibrahim, Musa, Yusuf, Isa & Muhamad; five are the fingers & toes on each hand and foot (of normal persons) respectively, five covers the 4 cardinal/compass points. In short five is the number of peace (of feeling), of well-being (spiritual & mental - dont we have 5 senses too - health) and luck. Translation of your text: The Malays generally prefer the architecture of their houses to have (front and back) staircases to have five rungs to safeguard their peace, well-being and good luck, which would in turn ensure that their 'rezeki' (income, opportunities, food etc) is always bountiful and abundant. |

right step / essential step Explanation: I try to look at several words trying to fit the context of the text. I try cool, calm, tranquil, serene, harmony, right and essential. I find that "right" and "essential" to be the clost that I can think of at this moment. The word "right" here mean - right/proper/suitable step. However, I have the feeling that it don't have "flavour" in such text. But I think it can fit the text. The word "essential" here mean - important step, and/or a must step. Regardless, I have to say, I am guessing. |
