Norwegian term or phrase: innarbeiding
Refers to the process of working extra hours which can then be taken as time off in lieu.
An alternative to working for overtime pay, which is also covered in the same text.

3.3 Avspasering/innarbeiding
Dersom timene ikke kan avspaseres innen rimelig tid, skal tid utover 40 timer enten utbetales som lønn i januar året etter. Dette avsnittet gjelder ikke for de med særlig uavhengig stilling.

For ansatte med særlig uavhengig stilling gjelder reglene om opparbeiding på samme måte som for andre ansatte. Det er likevel ikke anledning til å søke om å få overskytende utover 40 t utbetalt som lønn. Dette ansees som en del av den fleksibiliteten en slik stilling medfører og er også reflektert i den ansattes fastlønn. Ansatte med særlig uavhengig stilling kan ikke regne med og få overført mer enn de fastsatte 40 timer fra et år til et annet. "Innarbeiding" - in this case, means that you have worked overtime and either will get to take ut out as time off ("avspasering") or if not able to take out all of the hours in lieu, then you will get it paid ut (up to 40 hours, in January next year) The rest of your hours (over 40 hours will be deleted)

There is also another use for the word "innarbeiding", and that is if you need a day off. You can make an arrangement with your colleague, for you to swap shifts, they take your shift and you take their shift at a set date.

Then both you and your colleague get a normal monthly salary but you do have to work an extra shift later in time without payment.
