duty to confer Explanation: This term is sometimes used in civil scheduling orders issued by courts in the US. In these orders, the two sides have a "duty to confer" before discovery disputes (conflicts about turning over evidence) is brought before the court for resolution. It is used to cut down on the amount of work the court has to engage in, since most issues are worked out without the court's intervention. |
