Is this a "party" to a case? I feel it's like being part of a class action, or something.

intervener/intervenor
Explanation:
The legal designation "partshjelper" succeeded the former "hjelepintervenient" for a third party that appears in a case as an intervener/intervenor. The intervention process is described in some detail at the link.
The example sentence is from a document I can't link to successfully here, so I'm afraid you'll need to accept that on faith.

agree  Adrian MM. (X): vs. (UK) litigation, McKenzie or next friend cf. the EN & Wales Law Soc. intervening on behalf of sued Solicitors http://www.nationen.no/2013/04/22/nyheter/ryanair/lo/parat/f...

agree  Charlesp: I am not so sure that a intervener, or third-party intervener, is the same as a "next friend," but it does seem that "intervener" is meant here. The point I am making is that this looks more like a "next friend" than an intervener.

-> There are two forms of third-party intervention in the U.S, i.e., by right or by leave from the court. I haven't had time to compare with the recent UK civil procedure reforms for that terminology.

arbitrator

Explanation:
I am a little unsure about this translation, since arbitrators often sit as judges in a dispute, but perhaps an arbitrator can take other roles in a case.

disagree  Charles Ek: This has nothing to do with it. Please look at the reference link I posted. As a native speaker of AmE and a veteran of five years of law practice, I can assure you that an arbitrator NEVER supports one side in a case in the manner you're suggesting.

-> The original term doesn't specifically state the third party is taking sides.

disagree  Norskpro: See the reference link I posted, for clarification.
