A correlation between the movement of two variables indicate that they move in a similar way, but it does not in any way imply that they are dependent of each other. The correlation can be interpreted as one variable being dependent on the other, both being influenced by other common factors, or simply as plain coincidence. So, the term does not explain why they correlate, only that they do.

Leif, and for your "agrees" Brigid and Charles. It may be that I'm overanalysing here....but does correlation not imply that two things (in this case the figures) have a dependence of some kind? Whereas the client is referring to the degree of similarity.
