compete Explanation: Assuming this is a verb (hard to know without the context, but the "-e" ending kinda suggests it), it depicts a one-to-one competition between rivals, be it professional or "romantic". e.g. " guttene knives om hennes gunst", or "de to ansatte knives om opprykket".
