Norwegian term or phrase: hyllegård (a with circle)
tourist brochure on top 50 attractions in Norway: Geirangerfjorden
"Perlen blant de norske fjordene, som med sin spesielle, grønnskimrende farge slynger seg inn langs stupbratte fjell med gamle hyllegårder i fjellsidene og en rekke snøhvite fosser."

I understand this to mean small farms on ledges in the mountain side - does anyone have a proper translation?

neutral  Richard Lawson: I think "... perched precariously on rock selves on the mountainside" is probably more accurate than "nestling in".

-> Well, it's in the eye of the beholder, I expect. I've lived here long enough for them not to seem precarious, but I suppose a tourist might! But "rock shelves" gives the wrong impression. They are very green and grassy, apart from the actual cliff faces.

neutral  Roald Toskedal: I'd say that 'mountain farm' is more similar to a "sæter" or "støl".
