Ich nazwa pochodzi od greckich słów krinon – lilia i eidos – kształt. Te przypominające bardziej kwiaty niż zwierzęta organizmy zaliczane są do szkarłupni – wyłącznie morskich, wysoko zorganizowanych bezkręgowców. In those deep-sea species that still retain a stalk, it may reach up to 1 metre (3.3 ft) in length, although it is usually much smaller. The stalk grows out of the aboral surface, which forms the upper side of the animal in starfish and sea urchins, so that crinoids are effectively upside-down by comparison with most other echinoderms. Like sand dollars, crinoids have skin on top of a hard calcite shell. In the case of crinoids, their long bodies are made up of thousands of stacked calcite rings, and each ring is a single large calcite crystal that contains pores filled with living tissue. When a crinoid dies, the tissue will start to decay, but calcite will precipitate into the pores, and calcite is stable over geologic time.
