The paper outlines the impact of battens on structural design, including stability of structural members. Attention was paid to the standard recommendations for the design of multi-branched bars with battens, considering their importance to structural integrity. The example concerned an upper chord segment of a truss bridge built of two angle sections, the number of connecting battens was variable. Influence of battens on structural load-bearing was assessed numerically by means of linear buckling analysis and geometrically nonlinear analysis, the latter in plastic and non-plastic variants. The numerical results were compared to the
standard design recommendations. The increase of battens was suggested to increase critical and limit load values. This effect vanished with the increase of the number of battens. The largest increment of structural load-carrying capacity was observed for a single batten introduced. The standard procedures overestimate the
influence of battens on structural static response.
