grip, hand grip, handgrip Explanation: The revolutionary part of the shield was, in fact, the grip. Known as an Argive grip, it placed the handle at the edge of the shield, and was supported by a leather fastening (for the forearm) at the centre - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoplite These hoplon shields seem to have been derived from a type of short-lived circular shield made entirely of bronze and having a single, centrally-mounted handgrip on the inside - http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_shield.html ---------- This shield includes a metal boss and leather hand grip |
