There are two types of geometry tools. The low resolution mechanical type tools are single channel tools, usually applied in base line surveys with the sensors being in contact with inner surface of a pipeline during a survey and extreme values of deformation are recorded. More sophisticated, high resolution tools are either multichannel mechanical type or touchless measurement systems, such as for example ultrasonic ones.
Wykorzystanie do inspekcji rurociągów smart pigs with different measurement resolution stwarza problemy przy próbie porównania wyników uzyskanych w różnych okresach eksploatacji rurociągu. Istotnym problemem przy porównywaniu wyników uzyskanych by calipers with different longitudinal resolution jest algorytm działania tłoka pomiarowego (caliper pig). Spotykane są dwa rozwiązania: pierwsze polega na periodic sampling of cross sectionnal geometry w rytm impulsów zegarowych (próbkowanie równomierne w czasie) oraz próbkowanie wyzwalane impulsami z układu odometrycznego (odometer) (**próbkowanie równomierne w funkcji przebytej drogi**). W obydwu przypadkach istotne jest, czy mierzona wielkość jest a momentary value pomiaru geometrii, czy też jest peak value (np. minimalną średnicą lub minimalnym promieniem) za okres pomiędzy momentami próbkowania.
