Portuguese term or phrase: jequitiba
no context. If possible I'd like the common name and the Latin name.

Possibly Lecythidaceae?

jequitiba branco (Cariniana estrellensis)
Explanation:
This tree was cited multiple times in a book I translated for Conservation International, and this is how the scientific editors wanted it handled.

Typically, the English translation is given first if there is one, followed by the native name in brackets and then the genus and species in parentheses. In the absence of an English name, the native name is given first, then the genus and species in parens. (There would be no reason to give the familiy name in a text of this kind -- you want the narrowest term, not the broader ones.)

Thanks! Whenever possible, I've been including the Latin in parens because many of her glosses are of the type 'sumaúma, espécie de árvore’ which I think is best translated simply as ‘kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra)’ -- thus doing away with something ugly like 'kapok tree, species of tree'. Anyway, I'm glad to know the standard form ENG [NATIVE] (SCIENTIFIC) - handy! Thanks.

agree  Rachel Fell: jequitiba - seems to be its common name, but it is written with no accent in English http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=prospective ...
