agree  Paulinho Fonseca: Usaria "...former professor..."

  -> Ex means he is not a professor anymore, he has been banned from teaching (former = antigo, anterior).

agree  Gilmar Fernandes: yes, professor not teacher and I also agree with "former" instead of ex-.....ex, reminds me of ex-wife...he..he.
45 mins
  -> Thanks!

agree  João Pedro Faria: Agree. "Former professor" may sound better, but "ex-" is much more accurate.

Suddenly, someone knocks on the door: a former teacher, banned from USP (...)

Explanation:
I am not sure I got the full sentence right. My understanding of the full sentence is the following: "De repente, batidas à porta: é um ex-professor banido da USP por incentivar (...)". If this is correct, so is my translation.
Also, "USP" was not translated. My first guess was Universidade de São Paulo.

Sorry, everyone. "Former teacher" is not the correct translation. "Ex-professor" is much more accurate, as you can see from Marlene Curtis' answer.
