I think the system is basically geared with "acheivable" results for the greater percentile. Pupils who underacheive being graded as ESN - (Educationally Sub Normal) which means they will receive "Special" education more in keeping with their learning difficulties.
From 2017 it is possible that children who don't reach the expected standards in KS2 SATs at the end of Year 6 will have to RESIT the assessments in Year 7. This plan for compulsory RESITS has been announced by Nicky Morgan, the Education Secretary, and a consultation on the proposal will take place in 2016.

Interesting Geraldo. I don't think there actually is an "equivalent" term. When I was teaching in the UK I can't remember anything similar. Of course there were "re-sits" which is more common than "re-takes" but this usually refers to GCSEs and A levels and such like. At younger levels I think kids were just "held-back" a year until they passed it. (the year that is, rather than specific subjects)

@Nick Yeah, I know it doesn't mean much (I was actually a teacher in the UK at one point) but I think it is understandable, in the context. Your 'retake' option is also a valid one but I'd stick closer to the original in this case as it is also not a perfect match.

Just for further clarification, these exams are intended to serve as equivalency for a whole cycle of studies in a particular subject (so from 2 to 4 years). So someone who skipped half of what we call the 3rd cycle (years 7 to 9) can still try to complete this cycle by taking these exams and each exam should cover the 3 years of material for that particular subject (maths, english, geography and so on).

Yes, that's what I found them to be from my research. However, I still need a translation - we can't call them second-chance exams, can we? ;)

@Diana: These are currently not compulsory for most students. These are a sort of second-chance exams for students that did not achieve a passing grade or have failed due to absenteeism. The time frame of the 'registo' could be relevant here...
