É por isso que pesquisei uma tradução relevante aos pesquisadores. Como você sabe, as traduções tem que se adaptar ao contexto. Espero que isso lhe ajude.
Hi Teresa, thanks for your nice note. Actually, I made my suggestion a week before the Kudoz question was closed, and also had some private chats with the asker to try to help him. I even called a friend of mine who works with university scholarship students about the two different suggestions; she said she had no idea what "technical support scholarship student" even meant, but she said they do say "recipient of a research training grant." But in Proz, people only pay attention to the latest Kudoz questions, so my suggestion for this question did not get the attention that more recent questions got. In that sense, you are correct that timing is everything. I just won't bother any more with questions that are more than a day old.
Hi Catherine, as I said in my comment to your "disagreement", I did not object to your suggestion and respective explanation. As a native English speaker, the odds are that you are correct when saying that my suggestion sounds strange in English. However, bear in mind that Proz selects answers automatically after a certain time when no other suggestions are made or if a consultant doesn't choose an answer him/herself. Your suggestion came much after that time. As we say in Portuguese "Inês é morta". Given the long lapse of time, I believe that consultant has probably chosen a solution to his doubt, and it might have been completely different from ours. Have a nice day!
Mario, with all due respect, I'm confused about why you would make what comes across as a snide comment that I should check all the other 990K entries in Kudoz. Of course there are many errors in Kudoz; that's why I raised the issue about this policy, which is responsible for so many errors. You may not realize that the translators who voted for the wrong answer did so days before I entered my suggested translation, so they didn't even have a chance to compare the two alternatives. The OP was unable to find any external support for the first suggestion so I tried to help. I provided documentation for my answer from reputable scientific, academic websites: did you check them out? Finally, as a native English speaker, I can assure you that "technical support scholarship student" sounds ridiculous in English. Teresa made a good attempt at a translation, but it was too literal. I applaud her effort, but she is not a native English speaker, so she might not be able to hear how strange it sounds to a native English speaker. The others who thought it might be a workable solution are certainly very experienced translators, but like Teresa are not native English speakers. Hope this helps!
I suggest you go over the other 990.867.121 questions and make the same warning, as many incorrect answers are selected automatically. This one, however, cannot be considered incorrect, as it says exactly and precisely what it means in PT, thus all the agrees of very experienced translators. There may be a term that is more common in the due jargon, but in no way does it make the selected answer wrong. The reader will surely understand exactly what it is.
Unfortunately, Proz's automation chose the answer with the most points, even though it is the wrong translation. "Technical support scholarship students" is simply not the correct English translation of "bolsista de apoio técnico", nor does it even make sense in English: it is a meaningless string of words. If other people consult this in the future, they should be warned not to use the translation that was machine picked. I think Proz should rethink this automatic selection system.
