Portuguese term or phrase: abertura do respectivo dispositivo
This is taken from a manual on safety practices within electrical installations.
Can anyone untangle this phrase for me, because the , "...opening time of the respective protection device". Just does not make sense in this context.

A quantidade de energia liberada em um arco elétrico depende da corrente de curto circuito da instalação e do tempo de abertura do respectivo dispositivo de proteção.

English translation:response time of the respective circuit breaker
Explanation:
It seems to me that this is referring to the time taken to effectively break the circuit, i.e., to create an open circuit with no flow of current when the circuit itself is malfunctioning for whatever reason. The protective device in such a case would be a circuit breaker, hence my suggestion.

tempo de abertura
release time

Explanation:
I've adapted the question to correspond to 'tempo de abertura'. The faster the protective device opens the circuit, the less the energy that needs to be dissipated.

Explanation: When any electrical contact is opened, current continues to flow across the (initially very small) air gap, until such time as the contacts have moved far enough apart to 'quench' the arc (this depends on factors like temperature and humidity of the air around the contacts, the voltage, ...). While the arc is burning, energy will be dissipated - maybe in the form of pitting of the contact surfaces, maybe in a more 'explosive' form (son et lumière) - but the faster the contacts are separated the quicker the arc is extinguished and the less the energy that ends up doing damage or creating fireworks.

amount of time that the respective device is open

Explanation:
I see your problem. It's NOT referring to the "opening time", but the
"... the amount of time that the respective protection device is open"

Hope that makes sense :)

A bit of a more thoughtful review of my answer is needed, it seems, with better wording as follows:

"...how quickly the respective protection deviced is opened."

That's more accurate.

neutral  Jennifer Levey: Makes sense? - No, none. // Pse make up your mind. 'amount of time it is open' and 'how quickly it is opened' are totally different concepts. One is right, in context, the other is utterly wrong.
