Portuguese to English translations [PRO] Science - Fisheries
Portuguese term or phrase:lamoso-lodoso
"...a plataforma continental, composta por sedimento lamoso-lodoso..."
In a scientific paper on fishes talking about species richness. All I have established so far is that LODO has a smaller grain size than LAMA. Suggestions appreciated.
E, como bem disse Oliveira, a gente tem que "move on to the next question."
I'm done. Moving on to the next question. Good luck with your translation, Colin.
Hi Mario. I really do think your answer is wrong. The answer is for a translation of a scientific paper. The source text uses a high level compound technical term. The target text should too. A referenced answer gives the asker a minimum level of confidence because the answerer has taken time to check the answer before posting it. What should I do if I disagree with an answer? Post neutral and then state my reasons for disagreeing?
Perhaps you're not used to our standards here, but we avoid using "disagree" as much as we can. No, it's not a site rule, it is our agreement, among colleagues here. If you look around the old questions, you'll notice the disagrees are very rare, above all when the answer is correct, which, in this case, I"m 100% sure, and I have four agrees from other colleagues to corroborate that. You have the right to disagree as much as you'd like, but I think you should be pretty sure it's incorrect, which you cannot be in this case.
1. I shall not delete your entry. 2. My efforts at humor anglosaxónico in the BMX case clearly did not click with you. Enfim há coisas que não se exportam. 2. I did not and do not agree with Mario's answer. I made a general comment that even correct unreferenced answers are not much use. Put yourself in the asker's position. I, like others who have also raised this topic here, do not value such answers. Check back and you will see that the one time I liked the look of an unreferenced answer I asked the answerer for references. I have no intention of being unfriendly. Mario did not understand what I wrote. I have apologised for that. This is no more than a mere misunderstanding.
How do you know this stuff? Get it? https://www.proz.com/kudoz/portuguese-to-english/sports-fitn...
I apologise for upsetting you but you misunderstood my comment. My comment is about about blank suggestions in general "mesmo quando acertadas". My view of your answer, in this case, is that it is incorrect for the reasons stated.
References were never mandatory in ProZ. We've been paritipating in this forum for years, posting answers without references when you are sure about the translation and when they are simple terms that really don't require references, as well as voting and chosing suggestions without references from other colleagues because we know they are correct. But disagreeing with a correct answer because no references were posted is something I've never seen in our forum. The En-Pt-En forum is the friendliest of all. I quit participating in the French, Italian and Spanish forums because of this Vanity Fair. I really hope it doesn't infect our forum. Thank you Colin and Oliver for the references!
I hear you. However, keep in mind that if the author really meant scientific, my guess is that he/she would have used scientific terms in Portuguese. That's not the case. This page from ATA may serve as a guide. See section on terminology: https://www.atanet.org/certification/aboutexams_error.php But the call is yours, of course. Switching non-fechnical for technical would be considered a translation error by ATA and other certifying bodies. Please note.
